Why Compost? Why compost? Quite simply, by composting, you can help the environment. The organic waste you put back into the environment can be made use of by other living things. It also allows you to recycle things that might have otherwise polluted a landfill or created toxic smoke in a garbage burning facility. The facts are that waste that can decay like food scraps makes up between twenty to thirty percent of waste. This is definitely something you want to stress if you are teaching kids to compost. Like us when we were young, they don’t realize how much damage we are doing to the environment by not composting. Finding places to put garbage is becoming a huge problem. Many landfills are closing and rural areas are now having the guts to reject garbage from urban areas. This means that you need to be as conscientious about your garbage as possible. By composting food, yard leaves and other degradables you will send less garbage to the overly full landfills. Teaching compost for kids it is a good idea to school them in how the natural cycles of nature work and how they can be part of the solution and not the problem when it comes to the depletion of our natural resources (like soil). Compost allows the soil to retain healthy amounts of water and adds nutrients to the soil. Flowers, vegetables, trees, shrubs, house plants and lawns grow better if mixed with matter from your compost. Most of all composting provides a renewable source of free fertilizer for your garden. Using compost is also good for the environment because it can help get rid of the need to use toxic chemical fertilizers and this is something that should be taught to our children before they get hooked on environmentally untenable solutions.
