Ideas for a Kitchen Compost Container

One of the peskiest things about a kitchen compost container is that most of them are pretty ugly. Nobody wants an ugly green plastic pail sitting in the middle of their kitchen or an open plastic bowl of yucky stuff sitting on their kitchen counter. However that is exactly what happens when people try to set up some kind of composter in their kitchen.

If you want to set up a kitchen compost container on your kitchen counter then you can be more creative than using just a Tupperware bowl or something like that. To keep the kitchen composter within easy reach (and also so that they don’t forget to compost) lots of people put their compost in attractive containers such as cookie jars and cookie tins. You can also use an old casserole dish with a lid. As long as it has a lid you have a good kitchen compost container at your disposal. In fact, vintage chipped crock pots and the like make excellent composters.

If you are collecting a large amount of scraps you can keep them in your kitchen in a regular garbage pail. Just a push on the pedal and up pops the top type of garbage can will do. You can put a plastic bag inside so that you can quickly transport the scraps out to your compost pile in the garden.

If you need a large pail and want to use the big plastic bins you find in the stores you can easily conceal them inside a cupboard. Right beneath the sink drain is a good place to keep this composter as it will be handy to drag out to collect scraps the next time you need to peel vegetables or fruit.
