How to Make Compost

Composting is not rocket science. It is simply a recipe of discarded ingredients that when mixed and left to sit will form a cheap, practical and effort soil conditioner and fertilizer.

Here is the basic recipe for how to make compost. Simply add kitchen waste such as vegetable peels, fruit cores, seeds, fruit peels, egg shells, nutshells, coffee grounds, produce scraps to a bin that is set out of doors in a place where it is not accessible to wildlife.

You can also make compost out of yard or garden scraps. To your composting heap all you need to do is add hay, straw, woodchips, sawdust, grass clippings, weeds, plant prunings, leaves, manures and shredded biodegradable paper.  You simply mix this all in with your kitchen waste.

Once you have mixed everything together all you have to do is wait for everything to rot into rich nutritious compost. Occasionally you should mix the compost. A good time to do this is every time you add new things to it.

However there is a caveat here when it comes to composting garden waste. Although many people use weeds in their compost this is nota good idea if you don’t want them growing again in your garden.  Don’t throw weeds like this on your compost heap. Instead burn them.

Yet another thing to watch out for is spreading diseases by throwing infected plant tissue into your composter.  A good example is the hosta virus X virus that is spread when people pull out infected plants and then throw them into a composter not thinking that the virus will survive the decaying process that is part of how to make compost. To be on the safe side be aware and keep away from such environmentally dangerous practices as throwing weeds and sick plant waste into your composting mix.
