Building a Compost Bin

Building a compost bin can be very simple. You can even use some kind of recycled container or a container meant for some other purpose to hold your degrading waste matter. For instance a large black plastic garbage pail is an excellent composter as the black color holds the sun’s rays and keeps the compost inside warm enough to support a generous amount of aerobic activity. You can even hide a big pile of compost inside something like a huge tractor tire.

If you are intent on building a compost bin instead of buying one then there are many ways to build a great one. It can be as simple as a wire mesh circle made out of fencing or you can construct something from shipping pallets. Shipping pallets are a popular choice because all you need to do is simply lash them together with some kind of rope to make a homemade compost bin. One corner of this should be left unfastened or slack so you have a way of accessing the compost heap with a shovel.

Yet another inexpensive way of building a compost bin is to simply use cinder blocks or concrete blocks. Stack them on top of each other to create a three or four-sided cradle for your compost pile.

If building a compost bin seems like too much work for you then you might want to consider buying one of the many composting systems that are available commercially. Usually more attractive then a homemade compost bin these types range from being big plastic rotating tumblers to simple wire mesh containers.
